However, the sport is preparing for a potential conflict: a 2027 work stoppage threatens to be the most catastrophic since the summer of 1994, when a players’ strike led to the cancellation of the World Series for the first time in 90 years.

The Economic Divide

The turmoil stems from a narrative of economic imbalance. The Los Angeles Dodgers have won the last two World Series and are perceived as having a financial advantage over other teams. Less wealthy teams feel disadvantaged in both competition on the field and the ability to sign players. Owners argue that a salary cap is the only solution.

A History of Conflict

For nearly 40 years, the salary cap has been a central issue in baseball. Owners have sought to curb salaries since Collusion – the illegal agreement among owners in the 1980s to suppress free-agent salaries – continuing through the 1994 strike. During that strike, owners, led by then-commissioner Bud Selig, planned to utilize replacement players and unilaterally impose a salary cap. This plan was blocked by an injunction issued by New York district court judge Sonia Sotomayor, who ruled that the owners had acted illegally in attempting to impose a new economic structure without collective bargaining. She was later called “the Woman Who Saved Baseball”.

The 2025 World Series: A Thrilling, But Costly, Victory

The 2025 World Series saw the Los Angeles Dodgers defeat the Toronto Blue Jays in a seven-game epic. The Dodgers won Game 7 with a score of 5-4 in 11 innings. Ernie Clement, a breakout star for the Blue Jays, expressed his heartbreak after the loss, stating “I’ve been crying for an hour. I thought I was done with the tears. I just love these guys so much. It was so much fun coming to work every day.” The Blue Jays lost despite having “a dozen opportunities to win”.

Is a Cap the Answer?

Baseball is the only major North American men’s team sport without a wage cap. Owners claim a cap will create fairness, but some argue it doesn’t significantly impact who wins. The NBA, NHL, and NFL all have salary caps, yet dynasties and competitive imbalances persist.

Examples from Other Leagues

• NBA: The Boston Celtics dominated before the cap, and the Lakers continued to be successful after its implementation.
• NHL: The introduction of a cap in 2005 didn’t eliminate competitive imbalances, with Florida and Tampa Bay reaching six of the last Stanley Cup Finals.
• NFL: Despite having a cap since 1993, dynasties like the New England Patriots and Kansas City Chiefs have emerged.

The imposition of a cap does come with one guaranteed benefit: increased franchise values.

The Real Objective

While owners emphasize competitive balance, the primary goal may be to increase franchise values. The Dodgers’ spending, while seemingly challenging the status quo, could be strategically aligned with this objective. A salary cap would provide cost certainty and potentially skyrocket franchise valuations.

As one former NBA great once said, “The bottom line is their billions beat our millions.”

Looking Ahead

Whether the owners succeed in implementing a salary cap remains to be seen. Regardless, ticket prices, concessions, and television packages are likely to continue rising. The idea that caps are designed to help teams like the Pirates and A’s win is a fallacy.
