From Near Obscurity to World Series: The Ernie Clement Story

Clement’s Unlikely Ascension to Blue Jays Starter

ERNIE CLEMENT, Toronto Blue Jays’ third baseman, has become the epitome of persistence and perseverance in Major League Baseball. Just three years ago, he was teetering on the brink of obscurity, having been cut by two teams in rapid succession. Today, he’s in the thick of the World Series, living his dream.

“Ernie Clement never has a bad day,” says Blue Jays manager John Schneider, likening his demeanor to that of a puppy. And why would he? After being handed a life preserver by the Blue Jays in the form of a minor-league contract in 2023, Clement has evolved into one of their most consistent players.

A look at his 2023 season stats reveals a player who’s here to stay: 35 doubles (career-best), a .277 batting average, and just 3 strikeouts in 57 at-bats during the playoffs. He’s not your typical power hitter, but his ability to consistently put the ball in play has proven invaluable.

“He continues to evolve, and we haven’t seen the best of him yet,” says Toronto’s hitting coach, David Popkins.

Did you know? Clement was drafted in the fourth round by the Cleveland Guardians in 2017. A couple of years ago, who could have predicted he’d be a World Series starter in 2023?

From Being Overlooked to World Series Contender

Clement admits he’s been overlooked throughout his career. But that hasn’t dampened his spirit or work ethic. “I’ve been under the radar, and I’m used to it. I would rather be under the radar. It’s great,” he believes.

His glove work has earned him gold glove nominations at third base and as a utility player. And he’s grateful for the opportunity he’s been given.

“I’m trying to bring about some of that backyard enjoyment I had as a kid,” he says, laughing when he recalls Schneider’s statement about him never having a bad day. “I’ve thrown a bat or helmet or two, but I love baseball. It’s hard to be in a bad mood.”

David vs. Goliath: Clement’s Perspective

The World Series between the Blue Jays and the Dodgers has been billed as a David and Goliath matchup. Los Angeles seeks its second consecutive championship, while Toronto hasn’t won a World Series since 1993.

“David won that one, didn’t he,” says Clement with a grin. “I’ll take that.”
