Arsenal Women’s Champions League Campaign Starts with Heartbreaking Home Loss
Arsenal Women’s UEFA Champions League journey kicked off on a disappointing note as they squandered a goal lead to lose 2-1 at home to Lyon on Tuesday. The French champions staged a remarkable comeback, thanks to two late goals from Melchie Dumornay, overturning a 1-0 deficit to claim victory.
First-Half Blunders Costly for Arsenal
Arsenal started brightly, scoring through Alessia Russo in just the 7th minute. Beth Mead played a delightful one-two with Mariona Caldentey before laying the ball off to Russo, who finished calmly for a dream start. However, defensive errors allowed Lyon to claw their way back into the game.
- An 18th-minute error from Daphne van Domselaar gifted Dumornay the equalizer, capitalizing on the Gunners’ hesitance.
- Minutes later, Mariona’s mistake led to Dumornay’s winner, curling a beautiful shot into the top corner.
Arsenal pressed for an equalizer but couldn’t find a breakthrough, with Lyon’s Christiane Endler pulling off several saves. The visitors also came close to extending their lead, with Tabitha Chawinga and Marie-Antoinette Katoto both going close before the break.
Second-Half Push Fails to Yield Results
Arsenal started the second half well, creating chances through Mariona and Russo, but Lyonnais keeper Endler was equal to the task.
Changes were made with Caitlin Foord and Olivia Smith coming on, but the game remained all square. Late attempts fromKyra Cooney-Cross and Stina Blackstenius were off target, and despite six minutes of additional time, Arsenal couldn’t find the equalizer.
