Arsenal Rescued Late Point Against Chelsea at Packed Emirates

Arsenal Women gave their supporters at a packed-out Emirates Stadium something to cheer about, snatching a last-gasp equalizer to rescue a point against a resilient Chelsea side. The game ended in a thrilling 2-2 draw, with the highlight being a stunning late volley from Alessia Russo.

The First Half: A Thrilling Start

The game started with a bang as Chelsea, unbeaten in the Women’s Super League since December 2023, pushed for an early goal. Lucy Bronze’s through ball to Johanna Rytting Kaneryd saw the winger’s effort hit the base of the post in the 2nd minute. Six minutes later, Alyssa Thompson broke away from Mariona Caldentey, receiving the ball from Kaneryd and looping her shot over Daphne van Domselaar for her first WSL goal with Chelsea.

Arsenal looked to get back into the game, with a Beth Mead corner deflecting off Erin Cuthbert towards goal, but Hannah Hampton palmed the ball away. Van Domselaar was Called into action at the other end, tipping over a long-range effort from Catarina Macario. The half ended with Arsenal pressuring Chelsea but unable to find an equalizer.

The Controversial Second Half

Chelsea started the second half strong, with Lotte Wubben-Moy making two crucial blocks to deny Niambh Charles. Arsenal thought they’d found their way back into the game in the 52nd minute when Stina Blackstenius rifled her shot into the top corner, but referee Mel Burgin ruled it out for an alleged handball, much to Arsenal’s frustration.

Arsenal made a double substitution, introducing Taylor Hinds and Olivia Smith. Smith immediately caused problems, drifting past Charles and finding Blackstenius, but her shot was stopped by Hampton. Smith continued to cause havoc, crossing the ball to Chloe Kelly, but the England international missed the target. Just when it seemed Chelsea would hold on, substitute Frida Maanum produced an inch-perfect cross to find Russo, who volleyed home to send the Arsenal fans into raptures. However, a late winner from Maanum was ruled out for offside.
