Argentina’s Young Guns Shock Colombia in Thrilling AmeriCup Win
Fernández and Corbalán Lead Argentina’s Upset Over Colombia
In a stunning display of resilience, Argentina’s youthful team emerged victorious against Colombia in the FIBA AmeriCup, on Monday. Down three key players, Argentina’s up-and-comers stepped up, securing a stunning 84-83 win at Polideportivo Alexis Arguello in Managua.
Juan Fernández: A Historic Performance
“Was a show of character.”
Pablo Prigioni, Argentina’s Head Coach
Juan Fernández, a 22-year-old forward, put on a historic performance, dropping 36 points on 15-for-20 shooting, including a scorching 3-for-5 from beyond the arc. His 36 points were the most by any player at an AmeriCup in a decade, besting the previous record set by Gustavo Ayón of Mexico in 2015.
Fernández also hauled in 16 rebounds, setting a new national record, and besting the previous high mark of 14 set by legendary Luis Scola on three different occasions. Fernández’s 44-efficiency rating was the highest of the tournament, trailing only Norchad Omier’s 48 against Colombia from Sunday’s game.
“Just that my name is mentioned with his is a great source of pride for me.”

Gonzalo Corbalán: Consistent Sparkplug
Gonzalo Corbalán, the 23-year-old guard, was also instrumental in Argentina’s win, scoring 20 points for the second consecutive game. He leads Argentina with 17.7 points per game at the conclusion of the group stage, while also averaging 4.7 rebounds, 4.4 assists, and 1.3 steals.
Prigioni’s Praise
“I don’t compare this group with any other. I don’t judge anyone against players from the past. I’m convinced that they still have a lot of potential to unlock, and hopefully we can see it in this tournament.”
Pablo Prigioni, Argentina’s Head Coach
Prigioni praised his young squad’s resilience and potential, stating they still have plenty to unlock, despite their impressive performance against Colombia.
