France’s New Goaltending Hope: Antoine Keller Takes Center Stage at WM
Keller: Huet’s Successor in the Making?
Since Cristobal Huet’s retirement in 2017, France has been searching for a goaltender to fill his immense shoes. The quest may have ended with the emergence of 20-year-old Antoine Keller, who is poised to step into the spotlight at the upcoming IIHF World Championship.
From Dijon to Geneva: Keller’s International Journey
Born in Dijon in 2004, Keller chose to develop his skills in Switzerland, citing better coaching opportunities, including mentorship from none other than Cristobal Huet himself. Speaking about Huet, Keller said, “It was pretty nice to work with him. He has so much experience, so it was great to learn from him. I remember watching him when I was younger, and I really wanted to be a goalie.”
From Junior Ranks to NHL Draft
- Keller represented France at the U18 and U20 World Junior Championships, leading the team to promotion in 2022.
- In 2023, the Washington Capitals selected him 206th overall in the NHL draft, expressing their faith in his potential.
- After a year in the QMJHL with Acadie-Bathurst, Keller returned to play in the top Swiss league this past season.
Eyeing Olympic Glory
“Of course, it’s the biggest stage in international hockey is to play in the Olympics… We hope we’re going to the Olympics in February.”
– Antoine Keller
Keller’s current focus is the World Championship, but his sights are set on an even bigger prize – the Olympics. As France looks ahead to the 2026 and 2030 Games, Keller is determined to make an impact.
Why France Over Switzerland?
Despite having dual citizenship, Keller chose to represent France. He explained, “I’m from France… I want to play for France.”
Though Switzerland never extended an offer, Keller’s heart belonged to his home country.
What’s Next for Keller?
After the World Championship, Keller faces a crucial decision: return to Lausanne in the Swiss league or move to North America to focus on the Capitals and the NHL. While he’s keeping his plans close to his chest, his presence in Milan next February seems assured.
