Ángel Orús Sports Hall Set for Major Upgrade, Awaits Funding Decision

Barbastro, Spain – The Ángel Orús municipal sports hall, a central hub for athletic activity in the city, is poised for a significant upgrade with the planned replacement of its main court flooring. This follows substantial structural improvements completed last year, but the final phase hinges on securing additional funding from the Government of Aragon.

The Ángel Orús sports hall is a key sporting venue in Barbastro.

A Multi-Sport Facility Serving the Community

The Ángel Orús sports hall is one of the largest sporting facilities in Barbastro, hosting a diverse range of activities each week. It accommodates basketball, volleyball, rhythmic gymnastics, badminton, and contact sports like judo, and kickboxing. The facility also supports school activities and federated competitions.

The hall features three distinct sectors allowing for simultaneous use, a climbing area with a climbing wall and bouldering section, a gym, multipurpose rooms, and ample changing facilities – including four individual and six collective changing rooms.

Recent Improvements and Ongoing Needs

Recent renovations have addressed critical structural issues. Work completed at the end of last year, costing €378,000, focused on repairing roof leaks and addressing humidity problems in key areas. “Those works were completed at the end of last year,” explained Councilor for Sports, Innovation, Fresh Technologies and Transparency, Fran Albert. “It was the most urgent thing, there were leaks.”

Prior to the structural work, the climbing area was renovated in March 2023 with an investment of €35,000, and the gym received a €11,000 upgrade.

The Parquet Project

The current focus is on replacing the PVC flooring of the main court with a sports parquet surface. The Barbastro City Hall has already awarded a contract for the technical project, with a budget of €181,500 allocated for the work. However, a detailed study revealed the initial estimate was insufficient.

“We have seen that more items are needed than we initially anticipated,” Albert stated, estimating an additional €50,000 is required. Securing this additional funding is contingent on support from the Government of Aragon.

Albert added, “That is the great work that is missing from the Ángel Orús pavilion right now, after the structural and roof renovation.”

User Feedback Highlights Needs and Desires

Regular users of the facility have expressed support for the planned improvements. Jesús Pardina, a local athlete, emphasized the benefits of parquet flooring, particularly for younger players: “The new parquet is welcome, of course. Above all, for children who have to play basketball. And also volleyball. Parquet is extremely beneficial for them, not only for image, but to prevent injuries. It has been proven that this type of floor reduces many injuries.”

Other suggestions included clearer markings on the court and improvements to the changing rooms and spectator stands.

Timeline and Next Steps

The timeline for the project is currently uncertain, pending a decision on funding from the Government of Aragon. Albert anticipates completion in 2027 if delays occur. In the meantime, the Ángel Orús pavilion will continue its regular programming, coordinating with clubs and schools to minimize disruption during the renovation.
