All England Open Faces Disruption as Sindhu Stranded, Sen Leads Indian Charge

Published: March 2, 2026

Travel Disruptions Impact All England Open

The All England Open Super 1000 tournament, beginning Tuesday, is experiencing disruptions due to escalating conflict in the Middle East. Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu is unlikely to participate after becoming stranded at Dubai airport amid airspace closures following US-Israel strikes on Iran.

Sindhu and her team, including Indonesian coach Irwansyah Adi Pratama, had a narrow escape after an explosion near their place of stay and were moved to a secure location. She was scheduled to face Supanida Katethong of Thailand in the opening round.

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) is maintaining “real-time oversight of the situation and standing ready to assist delegations experiencing delays or route changes.” They are also reviewing and preparing potential contingencies within the competition schedule should any players experience delayed arrival.

Lakshya Sen Prepares for Shi Yuqi Clash

Despite the travel challenges, Lakshya Sen has arrived in Birmingham and is preparing for a challenging first-round match against defending champion Shi Yuqi, the World No. 1.

Sen recently prevailed in a practice match against fellow Indian player Ayush Shetty, potentially offering insights for both players’ upcoming matches. Coach Vimal Kumar believes Sen has a 50-50 chance against Shi Yuqi, acknowledging the Chinese player as a complete player.

Sen has previously defeated Shi Yuqi, at the 2022 Asian Games (though India lost the overall team match 2-3), even while battling a fever. He has a history of strong performances at the All England, reaching the final in 2022 and pushing several top players to the brink.

“If Lakshya can retrieve, make it hard for Shi to pick early points, and then counter-attack, he can surprise. But he cannot give him freebies early on. He has to play like it’s the All England final,”

Vimal Kumar, Coach

Ayush Shetty Faces Indonesian Challenge

Ayush Shetty, making his All England debut, will face Alwi Farhan of Indonesia in the opening round. The two 20-year-olds have a history in junior competitions, with Farhan holding a 3-2 career head-to-head advantage, including a win in the Junior Worlds final.

Farhan’s strategy typically involves rush[ing] and crowd[ing] Ayush by pushing the pace early and swamping his mind. Vimal Kumar advises Shetty to be alert, get a good warm-up so he moves quickly and contain Alwi, utilizing length and tosses to preserve the Indonesian engaged.

Other Indian Players in the Mix

Kidambi Srikanth may also participate as the first reserve, potentially joining Sen and Shetty in the main draw. The men’s doubles pair of Satwik-Chirag will face Malaysians Kang Khai Xing and Aaron Tai in their opener. Treesa-Gayatri will compete against Sayaka Hirota-Ayako Sakuramoto.

Unnati Hooda and Malvika Bansod will also compete, with Hooda facing eighth seed Pornpawee Chochuwong and Bansod taking on third seed Chen Yufei.

The conflict in the Middle East has undoubtedly impacted the All England Open, but those players who have arrived in Birmingham are determined to make the most of their opportunity.
