Ajax Thrashes Fortuna Sittard Despite Injury Setback
Ajax has booked an easy Premier League victory at home against Fortuna Sittard. The Amsterdam team, who already made the difference in the first half with three goals, won 4-1 against the Limburgers.
Zinchenko Injury Overshadows Win
The victory was tainted by the rapid retirement of winter signing Oleksandr Zinchenko. The Ukrainian left back, who made his starting debut after a substitute against AZ, injured his knee after just two minutes.
“Unhappy Zinchenko drops out a few minutes after basic debut at Ajax.”
The stretcher was taken from the field, but he was able to walk off the field with support.
Ajax Responds Swiftly
Ajax, which had drawn the last two Premier League matches, was immediately alert despite Zinchenko’s rapid retirement. While the unfortunate Ukrainian was still walking in the catacombs, the Belgian Jorthy Mokio scored the 1-0 against the ropes on a pass from Kasper Dolberg.
- With fifteen minutes already 2-0 and this time too the goal was Belgian. Rayane Bounida received the ball from the third Belgian in the starting line-up, Mika Godts, and aimed it into the far corner with his left leg. It was Bounida’s first Premier League goal in Amsterdam service.
- Ten minutes later it was Godts himself who completed the Belgian hat-trick. After a pass from Mokio, Godts turned away well and then struck hard with his right. The shot crashed hard into the far corner behind Fortuna goalkeeper Luuk Koopmans.
Fortuna Sittard’s Pinprick Goal
Fortuna had little say in the Johan Cruijff Arena but managed to deliver a small pinprick. A sharp cross from Dimitrios Limnios was slid into his own goal by Ajax defender Josip Sutalo for the 3-1 on the stroke of half-time.
Dolberg then managed to score with his head, but his goal was disallowed because he had pushed his direct opponent. The rest of the second half then dragged on with Ajax becoming a bit sloppy and Fortuna not having the strength to become really dangerous. Ten minutes before the end, the Arena bounced back once more when Godts made it 4-1 with a hard shot from substitute Wout Weghorst.
Looking Ahead
Ajax will hope that Zinchenko’s injury is not as serious as it initially appears and that he can return to action soon. The team has an important Champion’s League match ahead against Real Madrid next week.
