At the Marilia Boncontro municipal library a space dedicated to African dances. On Saturday 11 January, from 5pm, the structure managed by Chieti Solidale Srl will host an open day of African dances. The teacher Antonella Gentile, accompanied by live percussion, will introduce the rhythms of African dances: movements marked and guided by the djembe, an ancient drum typical of much of central and western Africa.
The open day, with free admission, will be an opportunity to experience what will be explored in the monthly workshop which will start on January 25th at 5pm.
Dance in Africa is a codified language, as Antonella Gentile explains to us, who has been teaching these dances for over 20 years.
”Music marks every moment of life of traditional African populations, from baptism to marriage, from harvest to death and each rhythm has a very specific function depending on the ethnic group. Knowing how to dance – says the teacher – is like knowing how to speak. Percussion and body are used to write words, to communicate, to express oneself. The dances of Africa represent a cultural behavior determined by the values, beliefs and attitudes of a people”.
