Aer Lingus Flight Attendant Faces Dismissal Over Passenger Dispute

A senior Aer Lingus flight attendant, Alan O’Neill, is currently involved in an unfair dismissal case brought before the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) following an incident on a flight from Marseille to Dublin on April 9, 2024. O’Neill reportedly responded that the passenger won’t be allowed to go to the toilet unless he gives the boarding pass.

Conflicting Timelines

The duration of the passenger’s initial denial of restroom access is a point of contention. Durkan initially estimated the timeframe as about 45, 50 minutes, but later conceded it might sound a little bit too long. Counsel for the complainant suggested the period may have been as short as 10 minutes. O’Gorman estimated the time before the passenger used a restroom at the back of the plane to be somewhere between 45 minutes and an hour, noting this occurred halfway through the flight.

Union Challenges Recollections

Lawyers representing O’Neill’s union, Fórsa, are questioning the accuracy of the recollections provided by other cabin crew members regarding the sequence of events on Flight EI-515. O’Neill was the ranking member of the cabin crew on the flight, which experienced delays due to an issue with the aircraft’s auxiliary power unit (APU).

Ongoing Case

The case is ongoing, with two additional days of hearings scheduled this week. O’Neill is not expected to provide his own testimony until later in the year.
