Michael Jordan’s Surprising Struggle: The 1990 Three-Point Contest
Jordan’s Confidence & the Stage is Set
In 1990, the indomitable Michael Jordan, fresh off back-to-back All-Star Game MVP wins, entered the Three-Point Contest. Jordan, dubbed “Air Jordan,” was known for his prowess; however, distance shooting wasn’t his forte.
Dream vs. Reality
With a field boasting Larry Bird, Craig Hodges, Reggie Miller, and Mark Price, expectations were high. Jordan promised fans, “If you want threes, I’ll give you threes!” But the reality was harsh. In the first round, Jordan hit just five out of 30 attempts (16.7 percent), finishing last.

Jordan’s Reflection & Hodges’ Victory
“I’m a little disappointed,” Jordan admitted. “I’m sorry I didn’t score better…” His teammate, Craig Hodges, won the contest, going on to defend his title in the next two years.
Jordan’s Evolution & Humility
Jordan improved his three-point shooting over time. Two years later, he scored six three-pointers in one half. Nevertheless, he maintained, “Shaquille O’Neal said it best: ‘God showed me I must remain humble. Nobody’s perfect.'”
