PSG’s Near Miss: When Hristo Stoichkov Almost Joined the Parisians

Before the Qatari investment transformed Paris Saint-Germain into a global powerhouse, the club enjoyed a period of success under Canal+ ownership. During this era, PSG actively pursued some of the biggest names in football, and came remarkably close to securing the signature of 1994 Ballon d’Or winner Hristo Stoichkov.

A Deal Nearly Done

PSG’s pursuit of Stoichkov, then a star at Barcelona, unfolded during a time when the club was making strides in European competition. The potential transfer was revealed by former PSG president Michel Denisot.

“I went to Barcelona for a week, Stoichkov was at the end of his contract with Barcelona so we talked. We were financially ready to align with the contract, we agreed with him. No, he wasn’t at the end of his contract, he had a year left and he wanted to leave. His agent at the time told us that it was possible so we agreed, we signed the contract before the transfer was made, which happened… We signed an agreement in any case. And, then, Barcelona took us for the beginners that we were and told us “no, no way”. Joan Gaspart, the vice-president who was the boss, turned us away and we returned to Paris without Stoichkov. And we told him we’re tearing up the contract, we’re not going to make a fuss about it.”

A Change of Heart from Barcelona

Despite reaching an agreement with Stoichkov, Barcelona ultimately blocked the move. However, the story doesn’t end there. Years later, after PSG’s growing success in Europe, Barcelona’s stance shifted.
