Fernández and Corbalán Lead Argentina’s Upset Over Colombia

In a stunning display of resilience, Argentina’s youthful team emerged victorious against Colombia in the FIBA AmeriCup, on Monday. Down three key players, Argentina’s up-and-comers stepped up, securing a stunning 84-83 win at Polideportivo Alexis Arguello in Managua.

Juan Fernández: A Historic Performance

“Was a show of character.”

Pablo Prigioni, Argentina’s Head Coach

Juan Fernández, a 22-year-old forward, put on a historic performance, dropping 36 points on 15-for-20 shooting, including a scorching 3-for-5 from beyond the arc. His 36 points were the most by any player at an AmeriCup in a decade, besting the previous record set by Gustavo Ayón of Mexico in 2015.

Fernández also hauled in 16 rebounds, setting a new national record, and besting the previous high mark of 14 set by legendary Luis Scola on three different occasions. Fernández’s 44-efficiency rating was the highest of the tournament, trailing only Norchad Omier’s 48 against Colombia from Sunday’s game.
