91-Year-Olds Compete in German Tennis Championship
Essen, Germany – Two nonagenarians are proving that age is just a number on the tennis court. Günter Dreschke and Franz Schlüter, both 91 years old, are competing in the Men’s 90 category at the German Senior Championships in Essen, demonstrating a remarkable passion for the sport.
A Friendly Rivalry
The focus isn’t necessarily on winning, but on enjoying the game. Your stop balls are mean,
Dreschke playfully remarked to Schlüter with a smile. Schlüter responded almost apologetically, That’s because I don’t have enough strength to play all the balls into the field anymore.
The camaraderie between the two players is evident, with fun taking precedence over the final score.
Record Participation in Men’s 90 Category
Dreschke and Schlüter are among five participants in the Men’s 90 category, a testament to the growing interest in senior tennis. The category was first launched by the German Tennis Federation (DTB) three years ago, starting with just four players. Tournament organizer Sabine Gerke-Hochdörffer expressed pride in the increased participation, noting a record five players this year.
Driven by Passion and Fitness
Both players made the journey to Essen independently. Schlüter drove approximately 100 kilometers from Sauerland, while Dreschke traveled from Bergisches Land. We preserve fit, it’s not a problem at all,
Dreschke stated, adding that he discovered tennis at the age of 35.
Overcoming Obstacles
Dreschke recently returned to the court after a year-long break due to a fall that required an artificial shoulder joint replacement. He also has two artificial knee joints. That was my first match after a year’s break. I’m happy that I’m fit again, can throw the ball up and move well again,
he said.
A Fountain of Youth
Despite their age and physical challenges, both players maintain an active lifestyle. Schlüter plays team games and even competes against players in their 80s, while Dreschke prioritizes regular exercise and a healthy diet.
Facing a Formidable Opponent
While their dedication is admirable, Dreschke and Schlüter acknowledge that Herbert Althaus, the reigning world and European champion at age 91, is the clear favorite. We probably don’t have a chance,
Schlüter conceded, a sentiment echoed by Dreschke. But that doesn’t matter at all. We’re happy that People can meet here, play and maintain social contacts. We don’t want anything more.
