The ’03s: Korea’s Baseball Hope

The so-called ’03s – Kim Do-young, Moon Dong-ju, Park Young-hyun, and Ahn Hyun-min – are making waves in Korean baseball. Born in 2003 and joining the pro ranks in 2022, these mid-20s athletes are strong candidates for the final squad in the upcoming World Baseball Classic (WBC) and are currently training in Saipan.

National team coach Ryu Ji-hyun expresses his confidence in the young stars, “They’re growing into the strong players we expected them to be. We’re eager to see what they can do on the international stage.”

Moon Dong-ju: Korea’s Fastest Pitcher

The ’03s have already left their mark on Korean baseball. Moon Dong-ju, the 2023 Rookie of the Year, showcased his big game prowess by leading the national team to a gold medal at the Asian Games. Last year, he recorded the fastest domestic pitch velocity of 161.6 km/h in the postseason. Coach Ryu is eager to include him in the WBC lineup.

“Moon Dong-ju is an essential pitcher for the national team. We’ll monitor his condition closely to determine his role in the WBC.”

Kim Do-young: The Total Package

Kim Do-young, the 2024 regular season MVP, is the ‘total package’ with his precise hitting, slugging power, and quick feet. Coach Ryu reports, “His condition is 100%, and we’re confident in his performance.”

Park Young-hyun: The Closing Candidate

Park Young-hyun, the three-time individual title winner, is a candidate to become the national team’s closer. His strong performances in big games, including the Premier 12 in 2024, have caught Coach Ryu’s attention, “He throws his ball without being intimidated, even in big games.”

Ahn Hyun-min: The Muscle Monster

Ahn Hyun-min emerged as a top hitter last season, boasting a ‘muscle monster’ physique and formidable power. His impressive on-base percentage and batting average last year speak to his Elite. Despite a temporary ailment at the Saipan camp, he quickly recovered and resumed training.

Both Park and Ahn showed their skills in an evaluation match against Japan last November, with Ahn hitting two home runs and Park pitching a scoreless final two innings.
