Liu and Malinin Set the Pace in Italy
The 2025–26 figure skating season got off to a thrilling start as world champions Alysa Liu and Ilia Malinin led the standings after the short program at the ISU Challenger Series Lombardia Trophy in Bergamo, Italy.
Liu Claims Ladies’ Short Program Lead
The American star, Alysa Liu, tops the ladies’ field with a score of 69.62. Her fellow countryman, Sarah Everhardt, is close behind with 69.16, while Japan’s Sumiyoshi Rion follows in third place with 68.87.
“I felt pretty solid out there,” Liu said. “There’s always room for improvement, but I’m happy with my performance.”
Malinin Dominates Men’s Competition
In the men’s event, Malinin skated to a commanding lead with a score of 108.87, more than 13 points ahead of silver medalist Kagiyama Yuma (95.44). Japan’s Miura Kao rounds out the top three with 92.76.
“I’m really happy with my performance today,” Malinin said. “It’s a great way to start the new season.”
Liu and Malinin Kick Off Their Title Defenses
Liu and Malinin won the world championships in March, and their strong starts in Bergamo suggest they are ready to defend their titles. The women’s free skate takes place on Saturday, while the men will compete on Sunday.
