Switzerland can look back on outstanding performances of its athletes at the Paralympics in Paris.
The 27 athletes are returning to Switzerland with a total of 21 medals and 26 Paralympic diplomas. 13 medals and 7 diplomas were won by sports soldiers.
The 9 athletes from the Army’s elite sports program won over 60% of all medals, which impressively underlines the importance of the Army’s support for Swiss para-sports.
The exceptional performance of Private Catherine Debrunner deserves special mention. She won a medal in every competition she took part in in Paris. In the end, she won 5 gold medals and 1 silver medal.
Private Celine van Till won silver in the time trial and the road race. Private Flurina Rigling won silver in the road race and bronze in the 3000m pursuit race on the track. Private Nora Meister won silver in the 400m freestyle swimming. The other two bronze medals went to Private Elena Kratter (long jump) and Private Ilaria Renggli (badminton).
Diplomas were awarded to Fabian Recher (cycling, 5th in the road race and 6th in the time trial), Flurina Rigling (cycling, 4th in the time trial and 6th in the team sprint on the track), Ilaria Renggli (4th in the badminton doubles) and Nora Meister (swimming, 5th in the 100m backstroke and 7th in the 50m freestyle).
Luca Olgiati finished 9th in badminton and Nalani Buob finished 17th in tennis.
The army’s elite sports promotion is part of the army’s sports competence center in Magglingen. The army supports the associations and their athletes through three funding schemes: the elite sports recruit school 79, the refresher courses (WK) with a maximum of 130 days of service per year during the entire elite sports career, and employment as a temporary soldier. All funding schemes are open to women and men alike.
