Wommelgem’s Sports Day: A Smashing Success in Fundraising and Participation
The day kicked off with a scrumptious breakfast at Sportcafé Brieleke, served by the managers and supported by Peter Poelemans and Ann De Beuckelaer, parents of ships Lise Poelemans. Over 200 residents joined, setting the stage for a day full of action.
Sports Galore in the Summer Heat
Despite the scorching summer temperatures, the sports enthusiasts of Wommelgem turned out in full force. A diverse range of activities kept everyone engaged, from yoga and pickleball to basketball, volleyball, and even lacrosse. The Urban Trail, a traditional highlight, attracted a large number of runners from Antwerp Athletics by Peter Fischer.
With the heat index soaring, some runners had to trim their distances to avoid overheating.
Fundraising Milestone Reached
“At the end of the day, we managed to raise a fantastic €9,980,” shared Gerda Thibos, event organizer. This amount is expected to exceed €10,000 once incoming registration fees and donations are tallied. Thibos noted the event received high praise from Karen Dobbé, district coordinator of Kom op tegen Kanker’s fundraising efforts, who was impressed by Wommelgem’s growth since the event’s inception eight years ago.
