Breaking News: Women’s World Cup Expands to 48 Teams in 2035
The FIFA Council has confirmed that the Women’s World Cup will expand from 32 to 48 teams starting in 2035, with the tournament set to be hosted in the United Kingdom. The decision aims to increase global participation and investment in women’s football.
More Teams, More Matches, and More Opportunities
This expansion will mean 16 more teams competing for the prestigious title, bringing the total number of matches from 64 to 104. FIFA President Gianni Infantino expressed his enthusiasm for the change:
“This is not just about adding 16 more teams, but taking the next steps in relation to the women’s game by ensuring that more FIFA Member Associations have the chance to benefit from the tournament.”
Concerns About Mismatches and English Hosting Success
While the expansion offers more opportunities for lesser-known nations, there are concerns about potential mismatches. However, the 2023 tournament in Australia-New Zealand did not see any results as one-sided as the 2019 US victory over Thailand.
The English-led bid for the 2035 Women’s World Cup was the only remaining contender. With stadiums across England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, Britain is expected to cope well with hosting 104 matches.
England’s Success and Hopes for the Future
Following England’s successful Euro 2022 campaign and their runners-up finish in the 2023 World Cup, there’s excitement about hosting the tournament. England star Chloe Kelly shared her enthusiasm:
“The Euros here was amazing… A World Cup would be absolutely incredible.”
