Jannik Sinner (No. 1 in the ATP world rankings) is, without a doubt, the best tennis player of the 2024 season. Not only because his trophies indicate it, where he also has the first two Grand Slams in his career, but also because the statistics reflect it. And in one, above all, he registers historic numbers that position him as one of the players with the best year of all time.

We are talking about the number of ATP points that the Italian has accumulated in the ranking. Currently and after the completion of the 2024 US Open, Jannik has 11,180 points, positioning him as the fifth tennis player with the most accumulated points in history. Who surpasses him? Yes, none other than the “Big 4”: Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal y Andy Murray.

Above the current leader of the ranking is Roger Federerwho in 2012 accumulated a total of 12,315 points thanks to, among other things, his titles in three Masters 1000 (Cincinnati, Madrid and Indian Wells) and Wimbledon. In addition, he won two ATP 500 (Dubai and Rotterdam) and was a finalist in the ATP Finals as the most relevant final of that season.

Then there is the case of Sir Andy Murraywho in 2016 had 12,685 points. That year, the best of his career of course, he won nine trophies (it is the most he has won in a season since that date until now) with Wimbledon as the jewel in the crown, adorned by three Masters 1000 (Rome, Shanghai and Paris-Bercy) and the ATP Finals.

In second place is the season that had Rafael Nadal in 2009. At just 23 years old, the Manacor native and the most successful Roland Garros player with 14 trophies, earned a total of 15,390 points that year, thanks to, among other achievements, winning the Australian Open and three Masters 1000s (Indian Wells, Monte-Carlo and Rome). Curiously, he did not win Roland Garros that season. After failing to retain the trophy in Paris, the loss of points caused him to drop to second place in the rankings, but no one can deny that he earned that astronomical number of points.

Finally we have to mention the case of Novak Djokovicwho in 2016 had accumulated 16,950. This dream year for the Serbian saw him win two Grand Slam tournaments (Australia and Roland Garros) as well as four Masters 1000 tournaments (Indian Wells, Miami, Madrid and Canada) and he reached finals in Rome, the US Open and the ATP Finals.

Yes ok Sinner can continue adding units, it is very difficult to exceed the points obtained by Nadal o Djokovic in 2024. After the US Open, the Italian will defend 2,180 pts from his titles in Beijing, Vienna, the final of the ATP Finals, the third rounds he reached in Shanghai and Paris-Bercy. If he defends the trophies he won in 2023, and is crowned champion in Turin, China and France, he would reach 13,500 points, which would mean he could only beat the Serbian’s record in 2025, provided he successfully defends his conquests from the current year. Will he succeed?
