Our brain, as a secret calorie-eater, could play a key role in weight control. Recent research results challenge previous assumptions.

The general advice for those who Lose weight is to exercise more and eat less. However, many people who follow this path fail, while others who eat constantly maintain their weight. This puzzle has been investigated by researchers from the USA – and the results are remarkable.

Our brain, they found, is a real “energy guzzler”. It uses about a quarter of the energy we consume during the day. And this does not only happen when we are intellectually challenged or learning a new language. Our brain uses most of its energy in the form of glucose when it Hormone produced and regulates metabolism and organ functions.

Dariush Mozaffarian, dean of the Friedman School, noted, “Saying that obesity is an energy balance problem is like saying that fever is caused by temperature imbalance.” He sees the widespread assumption that obesity is caused by chronic “too much calories” as oversimplified. In other words, people who consume fewer calories than they burn each day do not necessarily lose weight.

Weight gain despite diet – possible causes

There are other factors that affect our body weight, not just the brain. These factors determine whether we are slim or rather heavily built. These include:

  • The type of food: Certain foods such as products made from white flour or sugar promote weight gain. Vegetables, nuts or fruit, on the other hand, help with weight management or promote weight loss. The key lies in the fiber: Not only does it keep you full for longer, it even burns additional calories and thus supports weight loss, as a study has shown.
  • Genetic predisposition: Much of what influences body weight is hereditary. This includes our metabolism, the number of fat cells in the body and our feeling of satiety. There is only a limited ability to “reprogram” these processes – or sometimes not at all.
