Trapani Basketball: A Farce Unfolding in Serie A
Trapani Basketball: Just Seven Players for Serie A Match
Italian Serie A basketball is witnessing an unprecedented situation with Trapani Basketball. The Sicily-based club found itself in a bizarre scenario this weekend, managing to field just seven players in an official match against Trento.
Match Stopped After Four Minutes
In a shocking turn of events, the three professional players on Trapani’s roster refused to play after merely 10 seconds, leaving the court along with their young teammates who quickly accumulated five personal fouls each. The match had to be stopped after just 4 minutes and 11 seconds, with Trento leading 26-11, including an astonishing 24 free throws conceded by Trapani.
The club was left with only one player on the court. The referee had no choice but to stop the match as it cannot continue with fewer than two players.
These are all apt terms to define what the Trapani Shark continues to do. Against Hapoel Holon, it was already a global humiliation. Continuing like this is torture and makes no sense.
Financial Troubles and suspensions Haunt Trapani
The farce took place due to Trapani’s dire financial situation and heavy penalties imposed for various financial irregularities. The club’s president, Valerio Antonini, has been suspended for two years, adding to the club’s woes. Trapani, currently 13th in Serie A, has already suffered 10 penalty points in the standings.
Earlier this month, Trapani managed only five players in a Champions League match against Hapoel Holon in Bulgaria, which was stopped after seven minutes due to a lack of available players.
Player’s Association Demands Respect
La Giba, the association of professional players, has slammed Trapani’s “indecent encounters,” urging the club to find a solution immediately.
We demand respect for the athletes of Trapani. We do not understand the reasons for this obstinacy in wanting to play these indecent encounters at all costs, which do not respect the minimum rules of fairness of competition.
