Weston Wilson has been one of the Phillies’ role players this season, but he made history on Thursday. The slugger hit the ladder, the 10th in Philadelphia Phillies history, in a 13-3 rout of Washington.
Wilson had four hits for the first time in his career. The 29-year-old slugger was called up to the team in July and has been an occasional player in the Phillies’ lineup since then, but on Friday he made history in his 24th major league game.
This cycle was the Phillies’ first at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia in 20 years. David Bell was the last player to hit the ladder at home, on June 28, 2004, against the Montreal Expos.
Weston Wilson joined JT Realmuto as active players to hit for the cycle with the organization. Realmuto accomplished the feat last season at Chase Field in Arizona.
This is how Weston Wilson hit the cycle
Wilson didn’t get off to the best start after striking out in his first at-bat.
In his second at-bat, he hit a long triple, the most difficult hit of the entire cycle. In the bottom of the fourth inning, he hit a single, with the Phillies already leading 9-0.
Wilson hit a home run in the eighth inning to make the score 10-3 in favor of the team. In the ninth inning with the last chance to make history, the right-hander hit a double to right field to make history.
The previous cycles this season were accomplished by the Rangers’ Wyatt Langford on June 30, the Astros’ Yordan Alvarez on July 21 and the Marlins’ Xavier Edwards on July 28.
