Werenski Celebrated with Ovation After Olympic Gold, Blue Jackets Fall to Islanders
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Zach Werenski of the Columbus Blue Jackets received a hero’s welcome Saturday night, celebrated for his pivotal role in the United States’ Olympic gold medal victory.
A Night of Recognition
Prior to the Blue Jackets’ 4-3 overtime loss to the New York Islanders, a video tribute played on the arena’s scoreboard highlighted Werenski’s crucial pass to Jack Hughes, which resulted in the gold medal-winning goal in the 2-1 victory over Canada on February 22nd.
The spotlight then focused on Werenski as he was met with a resounding standing ovation and chants of “USA!” from the appreciative Columbus crowd.
Fans too had the opportunity to view Werenski’s U.S. Jersey and gold medal, which were displayed in the main concourse of Nationwide Arena, drawing a line that stretched halfway around the arena.
“It was really cool,” Werenski said. “I was excited for it and it’s super special coming back here and seeing that and seeing our fans get behind it.”

Remembering Johnny Gaudreau
The pregame tribute also included a touching moment honoring the late Matthew Tkachuk and Johnny Gaudreau, with Werenski and Tkachuk skating with the U.S. Team carrying Gaudreau’s No. 13 jersey. Gaudreau, a beloved former Blue Jacket, tragically passed away in August 2024.
Werenski’s Continued Success
Despite a busy schedule that included Olympic competition, celebrations, and appearances at the White House and State of the Union speech, Werenski’s performance hasn’t faltered. He has recorded three assists in the two games since the Olympic break, extending his point streak to nine consecutive games – a franchise record for a Blue Jackets defenseman.
Game Recap
Werenski contributed with two assists on Saturday night, including one on Mason Marchment’s goal and another on Adam Fantilli’s goal. Despite his efforts, the Blue Jackets were unable to secure a win, falling to the Islanders in overtime.
“I think both games probably deserved four points, and we came away with one against two teams we’re chasing and we only have 24 games left now. So extremely disappointing,”

Columbus had won seven straight before the Olympics break but have picked up only one point in its past two games. The Blue Jackets lost 4-2 to Boston on Thursday.
