San Antonio Spurs forward Victor Wembanyama, 22, has revealed the emotional toll of a deep vein thrombosis diagnosis that threatened his career, detailing his journey back to the court with renewed perspective.

In an interview with the magazine “Love,” Wembanyama described his initial reaction to the diagnosis.

“As I found out, I broke down,”

Diagnosis Interrupted Promising Season

Wembanyama had noticed physical issues in the weeks leading up to the diagnosis, culminating during the 2025 NBA All-Star Game.

“The All-Star Game last year was the worst I’ve ever felt on a basketball court. I had maybe five percent blood flow in my right arm.”

The diagnosis forced him to complete the 2024/25 season prematurely.

“I didn’t know how long I would be out,”

Wembanyama explained.

“For a while, I felt completely vulnerable and helpless.”

Rather than succumb to discouragement, Wembanyama shifted his mindset.

“I changed my mindset and started to see it as a challenge,”

he stated.

“If that’s my fate in life, I’m going to do everything to make the best of it.”

Working with a medical team, Wembanyama steadily worked his way back to full health. He is now back on the court, with a newfound appreciation for the game.

Wembanyama showcased his regained form in a recent 121-106 victory against the Detroit Pistons, delivering a dominant performance with 38 points, 16 rebounds and 5 blocks.

Despite his success, his perspective has evolved.

“I try not to grab the game for granted because I’ve seen how quickly it can be taken away.”
