Wattel Leads Charge, French Trio Shine at UAE Challenge

Ajman, UAE – Romain Wattel ignited the opening day of the UAE Challenge, securing a stunning 65 (-7) and immediately taking the lead alongside Dutchman Vince van Veen and South African JC Ritchie. Adding to the French contingent’s impressive performance, Clément Sordet and Oihan Guillamoundeguy positioned themselves firmly in the top 10, showcasing the depth of talent competing on the European Tour.

Wattel, returning to competitive golf after a period on the Challenge Tour, demonstrated exceptional form at the Al Zorah Golf & Yacht Club. After a solid start, the 34-year-old mounted a stunning late surge, closing with a remarkable -4, punctuated by five birdies and a string of impressive shots.

Van Veen, however, experienced a slight stumble on the 7th hole (bogey), conceding a one-stroke advantage to Wattel. Ritchie, also battling on the first day, delivered a birdie on the 18th, trailing by one.

Alongside Wattel, Sordet and Guillamoundeguy delivered equally impressive performances, securing a joint 9th place with a score of 67 (-5). Sordet’s day began with a double bogey on the first tee, but he demonstrated remarkable resilience, recovering to complete his round and setting the tone for a strong campaign.
