Walking Cricket: A Game for Everyone

Aspect Details
Initiative Overview Women of all ages and abilities are encouraged to take up walking cricket for its social and health benefits. The Somerset Cricket Federation has been running free weekly sessions for women at the YMCA in Highbridge, with additional sessions available at other county locations.
What is Walking Cricket? Walking cricket is an adapted version of the conventional game, played at a slower pace, making it accessible to everyone. The Somerset Cricket Foundation aims to promote fitness and support mental health through these sessions.
Participant Experience
  • Penny’s Experience: “The social aspect is just as important as the cricket. Many of the people I’ve met here have become friends.”
  • Penny on Women’s Sessions: “Having a women’s only session is really encouraging. Some people just feel a lot more comfortable playing with other women.”
  • Elaine’s Experience: “It’s great fun and it’s nice to meet other women from different groups and be part of a community. I’ve watched cricket for 40 years and when I heard about walking cricket, I had to come and have a look.”
  • Elaine’s Initial Impressions: “It was intimidating at first, but the others made me feel welcome. I just felt like a big kid in a playground – I’ve not stopped smiling in 12 months.”
Broader Impact The foundation runs ten walking cricket hubs across Somerset, including locations like Wells, Bath, and Weston-super-Mare. Mixed sessions where men and women play together are also available.
Community Activation Officer Insights Mustafa Shaikh: “We want to encourage more physical activity to help with other challenges around healthy living and mental health. Walking cricket is having a massive impact on people’s lives, and we just want to get the message out there that cricket can be for everyone and you can have a lot of fun.”
