Alex Bregman remains one of the biggest fish still available in the annual free agent fishery.
His name has been repeatedly associated with the Detroit Tigers and the New York Mets, but we shouldn’t forget the Boston Red Sox in all of this, as the latter would always be looking to add a solid hitter to their lineup with a view to the next season.
By trading to secure the services of Garrett Crochet, the Sox bet right and added a high-quality pitcher to their arsenal, but their offense has remained almost unchanged since their last game played in 2024.
The fact of having signed an agreement with gunner Walker Buehler on December 28, however, could change the situation and open the door wide to the arrival of Bregman with the Massachusetts team.
Indeed, now a member of the Red Sox for the 2025 season thanks to a contract that will earn him the tidy sum of just over $21.05 million, Buehler could influence his friend and business partner to choose Boston as his next destination.
Buehler and Bregman share a passion in life other than baseball, that of racehorses. The two men even have joint financial interests in certain animals. Knowing each other well, perhaps the two will want to share some time together in a Red Sox uniform?
Walker Buehler mentioned that he tried to encourage his comrade to make the jump to the East division and thus leave the only team with which he has played since the start of his career, that is to say the Houston Astros.
Changing teams in the middle of your career always raises a bit of uncertainty and Bregman is no different from other athletes who, like him, have had to set new goals elsewhere. Knowing that a friend is now part of the equation could reassure them and influence their choice.
Bregman’s arrival in Boston would certainly cause a game of dominoes, as the left side of the Red Sox infield is already occupied by Rafael Devers and Trevor Story. However, Bregman would have mentioned being open to the possibility of playing at second cushion in order to properly acclimatize to his new formation if that becomes necessary.
If Tristan Casas were to be traded to another team, Devers could then move to first base, but seeing Bregman occupy the second base position upon his arrival in Boston would represent the most logical solution in the short term.
During the current off-season, the Red Sox demonstrated their ambition by adding pitchers of the caliber of Crochet, Buehler and Aroldis Chapman to their lineup, but the offensive aspect was not addressed by their big man, Craig Breslow. The latter, with the help of Buehler, would make a great acquisition by convincing Alex Bregman to sign a pact for a few seasons in Boston.
The return to form of veteran Trevor Story within the Sox lineup is an element that should not be overlooked. In 2024, Story has only played 26 games for Alex Cora, who only played 163 in three seasons in Boston. The 32-year-old veteran has not been lucky, having suffered numerous injuries.
