Vitello Addresses Team Amid Speculations
During a fall scrimmage at Lindsey Nelson Stadium on Oct. 18, Vitello addressed his team in right field, openly discussing the reports that he is set to be the Giants’ next manager. Meanwhile, The Athletic, citing sources, reported that Vitello and the Giants are closing in on a deal.

An Unprecedented Move
If Vitello is hired by the Giants, it would be an unprecedented move. He would be the first sitting college baseball coach to jump directly into an MLB manager job without prior MLB experience.
Vitello’s Tennessee Legacy
Vitello has led the Volunteers to unprecedented success since taking over the program in 2017. He guided Tennessee to its first national title in 2024, winning the College World Series. Under his leadership, the Vols have made three trips to Omaha, won two SEC regular-season titles, and two SEC Tournament titles.
Giants’ Situation and Vitello’s Connection
The Giants are looking to replace Bob Melvin, who was fired after two seasons. Vitello’s connection to the Giants extends beyond the potential job offer. Former Tennessee star Drew Gilbert is currently on the Giants’ roster, having been traded from the New York Mets and later called up to the MLB.
What’s Next?
While Vitello has not denied the possibility of joining the Giants, he has made it clear that no deal is finalized yet. Fans of both Tennessee baseball and the San Francisco Giants will have to wait for official announcements to know for sure what the future holds for Vitello.
