Rising Star Mboko Shocks Tennis World; Gauff Next on the Agenda

In a meteoric rise that hasonclickleft the tennis world stunned, 18-year-old Victoria Mboko is making waves on the court. The Canadian teenager has stormed up the rankings, from No. 333 at the start of the year to her current No. 156 position, with an impressive 33-3 win-loss record in 2025.

From wildcard to contender

Mboko’s journey to the big leagues began with a pair of ITF W35 titles in the Caribbean. She hasn’t looked back since, capturing trophy after trophy in Rome, Georgia, Manchester, and Porto. Her confidence has grown with each victory, as she’s learned to trust her game and believe in her abilities.

Mboko’s star continued to rise with Miami wildcard entry, where she notched her first Top 100 win over Camila Osorio. She then pushed Paula Badosa to the limit in a second-round barnstormer.

This week, Mboko has once again proven her metal, winning her way through qualifying with victories over Cristina Bucsa and Kamilla Rakhimova. A first-round defeat of wild card Arianna Zucchini has set her up with a primetime date against No. 4 seed Coco Gauff.

Mboko’s big-hitting style and diverse game

"It’s all about being versatile and prepared for any situation on the court," Mboko said. "Nathalie has helped me a lot in that regard."

Family inspiration and cultural roots

Mboko’s tennis journey began at the age of 3, inspired by her three older siblings who all played the game. Though she’s yet to beat any of them in a match, she remains determined to one day claim victory.

The young Canuck also draws inspiration from professional players like Serena Williams and Bianca Andreescu. In fact, Andreescu has taken Mboko under her wing, offering advice and support to the rising star.

Mboko’s parents emigrated from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, instilling a love for their heritage in their children. Although she hasn’t yet visited the DRC, Mboko cherishes the moments spent savoring her mother’s beignets – a delicious Congolese doughnut treat.

Looking ahead to Roland Garros and beyond

Mboko’s impressive form has earned her a wild card for the French Open, where she’ll make her Grand Slam debut in qualifying. With Tauziat by her side, Mboko will be well-prepared for the occasion.
