Yerevan, Armenia – In a spectacular display of skill and determination, Uzbekistan, competing for the first time ever at an IIHF event, won the 2025 IIHF World Championship Division IV, held in Yerevan, Armenia. The Central Asian team dominated the tournament, earning 13 out of 15 possible points, outscoring their opponents 79-10. As a result of their triumph, Uzbekistan secured a promotion to Division III Group B in 2026.
A Tight Race for the Top
The race for gold, silver, and bronze was a closely fought battle between Uzbekistan, host nation Armenia, and Kuwait. The order of finish was determined by their head-to-head meetings, with Uzbekistan emerging victorious, followed by Armenia and Kuwait.
Uzbekistan’s Impressive Run
Uzbekistan began their campaign on 13 April with a resounding 13-3 victory over Kuwait. Vadim Kravchenko, Artyom Maltsev, and Vasiliy Jilov each contributed five points to the win. However, Kuwait responded strongly, suffering just one defeat throughout the tournament.
The following day, Armenia edged out Uzbekistan 3-2 in a thrilling shootout, thanks to a heroic 57-save performance by goaltender Artem Putalian. But Kuwait had the last laugh, defeating Armenia 5-4 in overtime on 16 April, with Ilia Drozdetskikh sealing the victory with a four-point game.
Armenia’s Return and Kuwait’s Stellar Performance
Armenia, returning to the tournament after a 15-year gap, finished with 12 points, while Kuwait amassed 11 points, marking their third consecutive top-three finish in Division IV.
