The sudden death of Brian Matusz shocked the baseball world. The former pitcher was found dead in his home in Phoenix.
Phoenix – Mourning in the USA. Former baseball star Brian Matusz was found dead by his mother in his Phoenix home last week (January 6). The circumstances now point to a drug overdose, according to a police report.
Drug paraphernalia and a white substance in his mouth were found next to the ex-pitcher’s lifeless body. It is still unclear what substance this is. There is no evidence of foul play.
Matusz struggled with mental health issues
The 37-year-old has struggled with mental health problems in recent years. His mother told police that he had used drugs in the past but had been clean for eight months. Two days before his death his tried Parentsadmitting him to Banner Behavioral Health Hospital in Scottsdale after receiving a psychiatric referral in the emergency room. But the hospital did not accept him and he returned home alone.
The Baltimore Orioles, for whom Matusz played from 2009 to 2016, expressed sadness over his loss. “Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the loss of our former player Brian,” they said in a statement. Matusz was selected fourth overall in the 2008 MLB Draft and made his Major League Baseball debut in 2009. He last played for the Long Island Ducks until 2019.
