India’s top player Sumit Nagal was knocked out of the men’s singles of the US Open tennis tournament after losing in straight sets to Tallon Griekspoor of the Netherlands in the opening round here. Nagal struggled with his first serve and lost to Griekspoor 1-6, 3-6, 6-7 (8) in the match played on Monday night. Nagal broke his opponent’s serve twice in the match that lasted two hours and 20 minutes, while the Dutch player converted six of the 11 break point opportunities. 27-year-old Nagal, a resident of Jhajjar, took some time to get into the rhythm. He made many mistakes in the beginning, which eventually cost him dearly.
When Nagal was trailing 3-5 in the second set, the game had to be stopped due to light rain. After this, he performed well but it was not enough for victory. Nagal will now present his challenge in men’s doubles. In men’s doubles, India’s Rohan Bopanna, Yuki Bhambri, N Sriram Balaji and Nagal will play with different partners.
