Team USA Hockey Celebrated at State of the Union; Hellebuyck to Receive Medal of Freedom
National Recognition for Olympic Champions
Washington D.C. – Both the U.S. Men’s and women’s Olympic hockey teams received recognition at the State of the Union address on Tuesday night, following their gold medal victories at the 2026 Winter Olympics. Goaltender Connor Hellebuyck will be awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor, announced by President Donald Trump during the address.
Hellebuyck’s Historic Performance
Hellebuyck, who plays for the Winnipeg Jets, was instrumental in Team USA’s 2-1 overtime victory against Canada in the gold medal game. He made 41 saves during the game and also assisted on the overtime goal scored by Jack Hughes. President Trump noted Hellebuyck’s performance, stating, I asked him, the one shot, the one where you place your stick in the back and it hit the neck of your stick and bounced off, do you practice that? Or was that a little lucky?
Hellebuyck reportedly refused to answer that question
, according to President Trump.
The Presidential Medal of Freedom has been awarded to 671 individuals, including athletes such as Simone Biles, Joe DiMaggio, Michael Jordan, Megan Rapinoe and Babe Ruth. It is believed Hellebuyck will be the first hockey player to receive the honor.
Controversy Surrounds Team’s Interaction with President Trump
The men’s team faced some criticism regarding their reaction to comments made by President Trump during a post-game call following their win over Canada. During the call, President Trump jokingly said, We’re going to have to bring the women’s team, you do know that. I do believe I probably would be impeached.
This comment prompted laughter from players on the call.
Some interpreted the comment as President Trump feeling obligated to invite the women’s team – who also won gold at the 2026 Olympics – begrudgingly. Others felt the men’s response was disrespectful to the women’s team, who had a dominant run to their own gold medal.
Quinn Hughes addressed the concerns, stating the men’s team was really happy
for the women’s team. He added, I’m glad you mentioned the women’s team again. We’re really happy for them. [There’s] a lot going around on social media right now surrounding our team and their team, but in the last couple summers, we did a lot of training with them and got to know a lot of those girls really well.
Invitation to the State of the Union
Despite the social media discussion, President Trump extended an invitation to the women’s hockey team to attend the State of the Union address.
Hughes Brothers’ Family Support
Jack Hughes, who scored the game-winning goal in overtime and Quinn Hughes were also recognized during the State of the Union. Their mother was also present and responded to the controversy surrounding the team. Jack Hughes notably displayed his chipped front teeth, sustained during a high-sticking incident in the gold medal game, while receiving cheers from lawmakers.
