Ukrainian Badminton Stars Find Safe Haven in Italy

Polina Buhrova (21) and Yevheniia Kantemyr (20), once opponents on the badminton courts of Kiev, are now roommates and training partners in Cinisello Balsamo, Italy. They have found solace and support under the guidance of coaches Gloria Pirvanescu and her husband Luca Crippa, who have helped them escape the catastrophic impact of the Russian invasion on their homeland and sporting careers.

From Rivals to Roommates

Polina and Yevheniia used to represent opposing clubs in Kiev, but the war has brought them together. «We have just returned from a tournament in India, but we are about to leave again for the European team championships in Portugal», they say, sharing their busy schedule.

“I discovered badminton when I was 10 years old, because it was played in my school” says Polina. “But I used to do synchronized swimming” adds Yevheniia.

Escape and Adaptation

When the war started, Polina was in Dnipro, while Yevheniia was injured and at home. They managed to escape to Slovakia and the Czech Republic, respectively. Now, they are among around 130 Ukrainian badminton athletes who have found refuge across Europe.

New Home, New Challenges

Two years ago, Luca and Gloria, who were in Italy at the outbreak of the conflict, managed to bring the girls to Cinisello. Three historic cooperatives there – UniAbita, Diaz, and Nostra Casa – offered them accommodation. The future of the two champions will be in Italy, as they learn the language and explore the country together.
