Is Cristiano Ronaldo Returning to the Champions League?
November 18, 2023
After a surprising farewell, there are rumors that Cristiano Ronaldo might make a comeback in the prestigious Champions League. Reports from Europe suggest that UEFA is seriously considering extending an invitation to Al Nassr, an Arab team, for the upcoming edition of the tournament.
Specialized European media outlets have revealed that UEFA is contemplating the inclusion of Al Nassr due to Ronaldo’s remarkable physical condition at the age of 38. Additionally, the new format of the Champions League, starting from the 2024-2025 season, could open doors for the Asian team.
With the tournament expanding from 32 to 36 participants, the possibility of having Al Nassr among the contenders is being considered. “@alharabi_44,” a user on the former Twitter platform, stated, “UEFA intends to invite Al Nassr to the 2024 Champions League because it is one of the most renowned clubs in football and has gained significant popularity in Europe.”
Cristiano Ronaldo, also known as CR7, could potentially return to the tournament where he has left an indelible mark. As a five-time winner of the Champions League, Ronaldo holds numerous records in his illustrious career.
He holds the record for the most goals scored in a single edition, with 17 goals in the 2013-2014 season. Ronaldo is also the footballer with the highest number of appearances in UEFA competitions, having played 197 matches. Furthermore, he has celebrated a total of 140 goals throughout his Champions League journey.
Financial Fair Play as an Obstacle
Despite UEFA’s alleged interest in inviting Al Nassr, Financial Fair Play regulations could pose a challenge to these plans. Al Nassr may have violated these regulations by signing million-dollar contracts, including the one with Cristiano Ronaldo.
However, the Saudi Arabian Football Federation has been working closely with UEFA to secure a “wild card” entry that would allow Al Nassr to compete in the Champions League.
