Here are the prices and any closures for the All Saints weekend of the road tunnels that connect Italy to France and Switzerland
Falling on Friday November 1st, there will be many Italians who will decide to relax away from home in All Saints weekend. Among the most popular places for this autumn holiday there is certainly the mountain, although many ski resorts are still closed. To reach some mountain resorts abroad, particularly in France and Switzerland, it is necessary go through tunnels, often requesting a toll. Furthermore, these tunnels are not infrequently subjected to maintenance interventions which may involve closures. So let’s find out the prices and possible closures for the All Saints’ weekend of the Mont Blanc tunnels Frejusof the Great Saint Bernard and the gallery Mont La Schera.

Modernization works began on the Mont Blanc tunnel in the autumn of 2023 and will be completed over the years. After a series of partial closures between April and June 2024, starting from 2 September until 16 December 2024 the tunnel will be subject to a total closure (as occurred between October and December 2023). During these 15 weeks, therefore also during the All Saints weekend, no vehicle will be able to pass through the tunnel that connects Italy, more precisely Courmayeur, to France, in particular Chamonix.

Even the road tunnel of Frejus connects Italy to France (specifically Bardonecchia to Modane). This connection will be regularly open and passable. The cost to cross it with a Class 5 vehicle (motorcycle, motorcycle with side-car, motorcycle with trailer) is 36,40 euro (45.70 euros for the return trip). Traveling through the tunnel with a Class 1 vehicle (a vehicle with two or more axles whose height, measurable at the front axle, is less than 1.30 m, and whose total height is less than or equal to 2 m) costs 55 euro (68.60 euros round trip). Class 1 vehicles include cars and cars with trailers (which must however respect the height limit of 2 metres). Crossing the Fréjus with a Class 2 vehicle (a vehicle with two axles or more axles that do not belong to Class 1 and whose total height is less than or equal to 3 m) is 72,80 euro (91.50 for the return trip). Class 2 includes cars with trailers up to 3 meters high, as well as light commercial vehicles and campers, which are also subject to the height limit. A different story however for the Fréjus railway tunnel, whose reopening is expected in the first quarter of 2025.

The Gran San Bernardo tunnel connects Italy to Switzerland and will be passable regularly throughout 2024. The only exception concerns certain vehicles higher than 3 metres, which will be prohibited from crossing the tunnel from 10pm to 6am on certain pre-established days (those marked in red in the calendar in the photo below). As regards the All Saints weekend, the transit ban for vehicles taller than 3 meters from 10pm to 6am will be in force on Thursday 31 October and Sunday 3 November 2024. The rate for a moto is of 18,50 euro (24.50 return), for oneauto 31 euro (50 euros return) and for a camper 48.50 euros (77.50 euros). The complete price list for crossing the tunnel is indicated in the photo preceding this paragraph.

The gallery of Mont La Schera connects the valley of Lake Livigno with the Forno valley. The tunnel is located entirely in Switzerland, precisely in the municipality of Zernez. However, the southern entrance to the tunnel is located just 600 meters from the Italian border. This link will be open regularly for 2024. The price to cross it by car is 15 francs (25 francs for the round trip), while for the motorbike it drops to 11 francs for the one way and 17 for the round trip. Between 21 October and 1 November 2024, changes to opening hours are expected due to maintenance works: the opening times can be consulted at this link.
