Tszyu vs. Spencer: A Fight for Redemption

Thirty-year-old Tim Tszyu began his professional boxing career with an impressive 24-0 record, including 17 knockouts. However, recent setbacks – a split decision loss to Sebastian Fundora in March 2024 and a third-round knockout defeat against Bakhram Murtazaliev in October 2024 – have fueled his determination to return to the top. As he himself stated, “It’s sink or swim,” Tszyu explained before the fight. “This is my redemption tour. I’m coming back stronger, hungrier, and ready to prove a point. I’m here to make a statement. If I have to walk through fire to get back on top, so be it. This is what I live for.”

Currently ranked No. 10 by the IBF and No. 7 by ESPN, Tszyu faces a formidable opponent in 25-year-old Joey Spencer. Spencer enters the fight off a majority decision win over Miguel Angel Hernandez in December 2024. “I feel great. It’s been a great time in Australia and a great finish to camp,” Spencer stated. “I think Tim is going to come out hard. This is an important fight for both of us. This is everything for both of us. For me, I want to go to the next level, so I have to get this win.

“You only get so many opportunities in boxing, so when you’re in the position that Tim is in, you’ve got to make sure you get back in that winners’ track. It’s important for both of us and it’s going to bring the best out of both of us.”

Fight Odds & Analysis

Initial betting odds favored Tszyu as a -450 favorite, with Spencer as a +300 underdog. However, these odds have shifted, placing Tszyu at -1100 and Spencer at +500. Promoter Eddie Hearn offered insight, stating, “I’m a big Tim Tszyu fan. I think he’s a great fighter. Sometimes, you can believe your own hype a little bit as a fighter, and I think they felt that Tim was unbeatable. I think the jury is out. Is he really at that level? Maybe. I think the fact that they took the fight (Bakhram) because it’s for a world championship. But no one really wants to fight that guy because he’s a serious dude with no value. So, if you get beat by him, you’re kind of like, but I like the fact that they did it, and they should have taken that fight (Bakhram) because it’s for a world championship. But no one really wants to fight that guy because he’s a serious dude with no value.”
