In Liège, first success as a pro for the cross and mountain bike specialist. Realini from Abruzzo is the best of the Italians

Dutchwoman Puck Pieterse, who rides for Fenix-Deceuninck (the women’s team in Van der Poel’s group), surprisingly won the fourth stage of the women’s Tour de France, starting in Holland (Valkenburg) and arriving, after 123 kilometers, in Liège (Belgium), passing through some iconic places of the Ardennes classics: the Cauberg, the Redoute and the Rouche aux Faucons. Pieterse, 22, a specialist in cross (Under 23 world championship, silver and bronze elite) and mountain bike (two silvers and a bronze at the World Championships), scored her first victory as a professional by beating in Liège her compatriot and yellow jersey Demi Vollering (SD Worx), who maintains the lead in the standings, and Polish Katarzyna Niewiadoma (Canyon-Sram); fifteenth and best among the Italians was Gaia Realini (Lidl-Trek), at 29″.

classification

In the standings, Vollering leads with 22” on Pieterse and 34” on Niewiadoma; Realini, 17th at 1’44” is the best of the Italians. Tomorrow is the fifth stage, Bastogne-Amneville, 153 kilometers, the longest of the eight scheduled: a treacherous day on the Ardennes hills and arrival on a 600-meter climb at 5.5%. The women’s Tour will end on Sunday on Alpe d’Huez.
