Cifu’s contentious remarks:
In the now-deleted post, Cifu replied to a Toronto sports fan account, @mrgrozz, who had compared the controversial hits by the NHL team to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Cifu responded with a severe slur, writing, "Eat s*** 51st state anti-semite loser. Israel now and forever. Until ever [sic] last Hamas rat is eliminated."
Later in the exchange, Cifu added, "Actually being a whiny dope anti-semite is clearly worse. Loser."
The NHL’s reaction:
The NHL swiftly addressed the situation, suspending Cifu indefinitely from any involvement with the team and the league. “The NHL has concluded that Mr. Cifu’s X posts were unacceptable and inappropriate,” the league said in a statement. “An in-person meeting will be scheduled with Mr. Cifu and the Commissioner at a date to be determined.”
Cifu’s previous social media controversies:
This is not the first time Cifu has been involved in a social media controversy. In a post from the same account in March 2024, Cifu made disparaging comments about a user, calling them a "sad creepy loser" and inferring they had special needs.

Cifu is also the CEO of Virtu Financial (VIRT), a co-founder of the company with Panthers owner Vincent J. Viola. According to the Panthers’ website, Virtu is "one of the nation’s foremost providers of financial technology products and services."
