Tiger Woods announced on Friday that he is undergoing surgery to repair a nerve impaction in his lower back.
Woods, who turns 49 in December, has not played since the British Open in July. He withdrew from the Genesis Invitational, finished last among those who survived the cut at the Masters Tournament, and missed three cuts at the other three majors of the season.
In recent years, his main health problem has been his lower right leg, after a serious car accident in 2022.
“The surgery went well and I hope it helps relieve the spasms and pain in the back that I have experienced for most of the 2024 season,” Woods said on social media. “I’m looking forward to getting this rehabilitation over with and getting ready to get back to my normal activities, including golf.
Woods is not scheduled to participate in another official event this year. If healthy, he competes in the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas in early December, an event that will benefit his foundation. The PNC Championship, which he plays with his son Charlie, is scheduled for December 21-22.
“I will continue to improve physically and work,” he said in July. “I hope to be back for our fifth major tournament, Father/Son, and I’m looking forward to it.”
