Steelers’ First-Round Pick Derrick Harmon Mourns Mother’s Passing During NFL Draft

Pittsburgh Steelers select Derrick Harmon at No. 21

The Pittsburgh Steelers have selected defensive end Derrick Harmon with the 21st overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Harmon, a dynamic pass rusher from the University of Oregon, is expected to bolster the Steelers’ defense.

Tragic passing of mother overshadows Harmon’s dream moment

However, the day was marred by tragedy as Harmon’s mother, Tiffany Saine, passed away shortly after the selection. Saine, who had been on life support since suffering a stroke in 2022, was unable to be with her son during the draft.

“On behalf of the entire Pittsburgh Steelers organization, I extend our deepest condolences to Derrick Harmon and his family during this difficult time. Though we are excited to select Derrick in the first round, our hearts are heavy as we mourn the death of his mother, Tiffany Saine.”

Harmon opens up about his mother’s influence

Harmon spoke to reporters about his mother’s impact on his life and career. Despite her health struggles, including multiple brain surgeries and a paralyzing stroke, Saine never stopped supporting her son.

“After all those brain surgeries, man, she did not give up,” Harmon said. “She still took me to practice, still went to work, and I always, always in the back of my head was, why can’t I keep going? If I’m tired, I’m injured, whatever it is, why can’t I keep going if she can get up and she keep going after brain surgery.”

Looking ahead

The Steelers and their fans will welcome Harmon with open arms, understanding that he needs time to grieve and heal. The organization has pledged to support Harmon in any way they can during this difficult time.
