The Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Food Sovereignty of the Government of the Canary Islands, Narvay Quintero, explained today in a parliamentary committee that his department will allocate 3.5 million euros of its own funds to help mitigate the losses suffered by farmers in the Canary Islands. islands in the face of drought, aimed at potatoes, sweet potatoes, vines, olives, forage crops and temperate fruit trees, and which will benefit more than 1,500 farmers professionals.
In response to a question about the measures of the Canarian Executive aimed at the olive sector to compensate for the results of the last campaign, the head of the department explained that in addition to this line of support, which will mean 128,620 euros for 47 farmers, producers can benefit to investment aid from the Strategic Plan of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and to agroindustrial transformation.
During his speech, Quintero explained that the Canary Islands “has faced a prolonged and severe drought, which has generated significant economic losses in agricultural activity.” According to the counselor, “this phenomenon has especially impacted strategic crops such as potatoes, grapes, olives, forage crops, sweet potatoes and temperate fruit trees, products that are not only key to the local economy, but also “They are an essential part of the food security and cultural tradition of the archipelago.”
