The Next Big Three: Djokovic Identifies Future Tennis Stars

The world of tennis is constantly searching for the next great rivalry to fill the void left by Roger Federer and soon to be left by Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal. Finding such a rivalry is no easy task, but Djokovic believes he has found the answer. After winning his seventh title at the ATP Finals, Djokovic confidently declared that Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, and Holger Rune are “the next big three” in tennis. He firmly believes that these young talents will take the sport to new heights.

Djokovic’s Perspective on the New Big Three

Djokovic on Alcaraz: “He is one of the most complete players I have faced in my career. He already has a brilliant career, and it’s evident that he will achieve great success in the coming years. He brings out the best in me.”

Djokovic on Rune: “I admire your dedication and love for tennis. You put in countless hours of hard work, and your recent victory in the Paris-Bercy 2022 final is a testament to that. You and your team have a bright future ahead.”

Djokovic on Sinner: “He is a remarkable individual with strong values. He is on the right track to win Grand Slam titles and become the world number one.”

The anticipated change of era in tennis has been repeatedly delayed. The new generation, represented by players like Medvedev, Zverev, and Tsitsipas, has shown great potential, but Djokovic remains a dominant force. At 36 years old, he has won the most titles, including four out of the five major tournaments (Australian Open, Roland Garros, US Open, and ATP Finals). Alcaraz, with his Wimbledon victory, is the only player to have challenged Djokovic’s supremacy, coming close to defeating him in the final of the ATP Finals.

In Italy, Djokovic had successful encounters with all three players he identified as the future stars. He had a favorable record against Sinner, winning four out of five matches. Against Alcaraz and Rune, the Serbian managed to tip the balance in his favor. Despite losing to Rune in the 2022 Paris Masters 1,000 final and the Rome quarterfinals this year, Djokovic defeated him in their ATP Finals encounter. In the semifinals, Djokovic overcame a resilient Alcaraz, who had the potential to change the course of the match but ultimately fell short.

Pressure on the Next Generation

Alcaraz, after suffering his third defeat against Djokovic, expressed his admiration for the Serbian’s incredible achievements. The Spaniard’s victories over Djokovic came at the Madrid Masters 1,000 and Wimbledon. Djokovic, however, remains determined to defend his reign and wants the next generation to feel the pressure when playing against him. As long as he continues to win the most important titles, he sees no reason to stop. The era of Djokovic’s dominance in tennis is far from over.
