IOC President Emphasizes Unity and Athlete Protection
Lausanne, Switzerland – Newly inaugurated International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Sarah Coventry has underscored the importance of unity, collaboration, and robust athlete protection policies to safeguard the future of sports in her inaugural address to stakeholders.
Together for a Stronger Future
We all have the same purpose… to ensure that our sports remain relevant, that we create platforms for athletes to realise their hopes and their dreams… All of you in the room have the responsibility and the keys to unlocking the future dreams of athletes.– IOC President Sarah Coventry
President Coventry stressed the need for unity and collaboration among various stakeholders, acknowledging that while opinions may differ, the common goal is to strengthen and protect the Olympic Movement. She drew an analogy from her coaching days, highlighting the importance of collective strength:
We’re only as strong as our weakest link. So, to ensure that the weakest link is just as strong as you are, you work together, you embrace each other, you hold each other accountable, and you find ways to get stronger together.
Protecting Athletes and Upholding Principles
Determined to ensure athlete protection and uphold Olympic principles, President Coventry outlined her plans to strengthen policies and innovate ways to safeguard athletes’ interests. She also emphasized transparency, neutrality, and faith in the policies implemented:
We want the next generation to be able to have faith in who we are. They have to trust us, they have to understand the policies we are putting in place. We have to show transparency and neutrality in how and why we are making decisions.
Consultation and Discourse
At the outset of her presidency, President Coventry launched a comprehensive consultation process with stakeholders across the Olympic Movement. She reflected on this initiative and expressed her eagerness to discuss various suggestions received:
We have had an enormous number of ideas, theories and opinions that have been shared with us. This is only the first step. Right now, we are pausing and reflecting. We are looking back, we are looking forward and we are analysing where we want to go.
