Lionel Messi won the Ballon d’Or for the eighth time in his illustrious career, setting a new record for an individual player. Meanwhile, his long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo remains stuck at five. This is likely Messi’s final Ballon d’Or as the 36-year-old Argentine has recently moved to the United States after spending the majority of his career in Europe. Despite an average season with Paris Saint-Germain, Messi’s World Cup victory with Argentina played a significant role in securing the award.
Shortly after Messi’s triumph, a member of Monaco’s royal family unleashed a scathing attack on the Argentine, but he is not the only one who finds the decision incomprehensible. Lothar Matthäus, the 1990 Ballon d’Or winner, expressed his disbelief and argued that Erling Haaland had a better season than Messi. He claimed that the award is proof that the World Cup carries more weight than anything else. “For me, no one performed better than Haaland. He was the best throughout the season and won important titles with City, breaking records,” Matthäus declared on Sky Sport Germany, before adding, “This vote is a farce, even though I have always been a fan of Messi.”
A former Parisian comes to Messi’s defense
Matthäus believes that the Ballon d’Or should have gone to Norwegian sensation Erling Haaland, who had an exceptional season. This comment sparked a reaction from Messi’s teammate and close friend, Angel Di Maria, who played alongside him in Paris. Di Maria responded to Matthäus’ remarks on Diario Ole’s Instagram account, advising him to “go cry elsewhere.”
