Tennis has lost a true pioneer and legend with the passing of Niki Pilic. The former world-class player, coach, and Davis Cup captain passed away peacefully in Rijeka, Croatia, on Thursday, September 23, 2025, at the age of 86.
From Player to Icon
Pilic’s tennis journey began in the summer of 1952, at the age of 13. Within just four years, he became a national champion and represented Yugoslavia’s junior team. His big serve and forehand soon marked him out as a formidable player, earning him the title ‘the King of Forehand.’
In a career bridging the amateur and Open eras, Pilic reached the 1962 Wimbledon doubles final, and the 1970 US Open doubles title. He was a ‘Handsome Eight’ member of Lamar Hunt’s World Championship Tennis (WCT), alongside legends like John Newcombe and Dennis Ralston.
Roland Garros Final and Wimbledon Boycott
Pilic’s most pivotal moment came in 1973. After reaching the Roland Garros final, he was suspended by the Yugoslav Tennis Federation. This led to an emergency meeting reducing his suspension to one month, thus barring him from the initial weeks of Wimbledon. Pilic’s exclusion sparked a boycott, with 81 male players withdrawing from Wimbledon in solidarity.
ATP Chairman Andrea Gaudenzi remembered, “Niki Pilic’s contributions, particularly his role in the Wimbledon boycott, hold particular significance in ATP history.”
Coaching and Davis Cup Success
After retiring, Pilic dedicated his life to coaching. He guided Germany, Croatia, and Serbia to Davis Cup triumphs. Notably, he mentored legendary players like Boris Becker, Michael Stich, Goran Ivanisevic, and the young Novak Djokovic.

Lasting Impact and Legacy
Pilic’s tennis academy in Munich was renowned for its discipline and insight. Five years ago, he was awarded the Golden Medal of Merits of the Republic of Serbia.
ATP Chairman Andrea Gaudenzi expressed condolences on behalf of the ATP, stating, “We are deeply saddened by Niki’s passing. His contributions across many roles left a lasting impact on players, fans, and the game itself.”
