At the dawn of the third round of qualifying for the Australian Open, there are only five French players left who can advance to the main tournament. Note that Léolia Jeanjean and Selena Janicijevic are facing each other and therefore, there will be at least one Frenchwoman among the lucky few.

Last year, French tennis did not shine so much for either men or women. Apart from the good performances at the end of last season from Arthur Fils, Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, Ugo Humbert and Benjamin Bonzi, the results are otherwise very poor, especially in the Grand Slam tournaments. Among women, the picture is even bleaker. And it seems that the situation has not changed much since the Tricolores are struggling to show themselves in these qualifications for the Australian Open, the first Major of the 2025 season. There were twenty-four of them to start this first phase in Melbourne and on the eve of the third and final round of these qualifications, there are only five left, two men and three women. Here are the lucky ones: Terence Atmane, Clément Chidekh, Selena Janicijevic, Léolia Jeanjean and Carole Monnet.

All the others whose list is as follows: Richard Gasquet, Luca Van Assche, Harold Mayot, Pierre-Hugues Herbert, Hugo Grenier, Grégoire Barrère, Titouan Droguet, Constant Lestienne, Valentin Royer, Calvin Hemery, Enzo Couacaud, Antoine Escoffier, Mattéo Martineau, Ugo Blanchet, Jessika Ponchet, Alice Tubello, Elsa Jacquemot, Kristina Mladenovic and Manon Leonard lost.

At least one French woman from the qualifications

The first round of these qualifications hurt the Tricolores. First, Luca Van Assche withdrew at the dawn of his first match due to an injury of which he gave no details. Of the 23 participants, only 8 managed to advance to the second round with a very poor 4/15 for the men (Gasquet, Herbert, etc.). As reported by the specialized account “Jeu, Set et Maths”, with 26.7% of French people who passed the first round (4/15), this is the 2nd lowest ratio for the French clan in Australia since the start of the 2000s behind the 2022 vintage (3/12). In terms of the draw, we already know that we will have at least one Frenchwoman from qualifying in the main draw since Selena Janicijevic and Léolia Jeanjean face each other. For the rest, Carole Monnet will try the impossible against the Slovenian Tamara Zidansek, Terence Atmane will face the Slovakian Lukáš Klein, after beating the number 2 seed and Clément Chidekh will face the Lebanese Hady Habib.
