Tanisha Crasto-Dhruv Kapila ousted, India’s campaign ends

Paris Olympian Tanisha Crasto and her partner Dhruv Kapila were knocked out of the Taipei Open 2024 badminton mixed doubles event after losing to Thailand’s Pakkapon Teeraratsakul and Phataimas Muenwong in the quarter-finals on Friday.

The Indian pair, 97th in the badminton rankingswent down 22-20, 21-12 against the 28th-ranked Thai duo in 31 minutes. The loss ended India’s challenge at the BWF Super 300 event.

Tanisha Crasto and Dhruv Kapila made a strong start, leading 7-4 in the first game. They appeared poised to take the opener with a 19-16 advantage but their higher-ranked opponents rallied to win six of the next seven points and claim the game.

While the first game was a close affair, the second game was a one-sided affair. The Indian badminton players won the first two points but could not take the lead for the rest of the match.

In the round of 16, Tanisha Crasto and Dhruv Kapila defeated the Chinese Taipei’s Chang Ko-Chi and Lin Yen Yu after a victory over another local pairing of Liao Chao Pang and Lin Yu-Hao in the round of 32.

Indian badminton players also competed in the men’s singles, women’s singles and women’s doubles events but could not reach the quarter-finals. Tanisha Crasto was the only Paris 2024 Olympian competing at the Taipei Open. PV Sindhu, Lakshya Sen and HS Prannoy gave the tournament a miss.

Next week, the Indian badminton players will be in action at the Hong Kong Open BWF Super 500 event.
